eReferrals Introduction

eReferrals Introduction

Healthquest, Canada Health Infoway and the Government of Alberta have collaborated to initiate eReferrals, which is integrated within your Healthquest.

Please note, eReferrals is currently set up for the FAST program only.

Sending eReferrals

  1. Once the referral letter is complete, click ‘Save w/Ref’ (This will save the letter, and open the referral template selection window, attaching the letter to the referral).

      2. Select ‘New referral’, followed by the appropriate template within your clinic, the below example
          selects ‘Outgoing referrals’.
            3. Select your ‘Reason for Referral’ from the drop down; ‘Referral Method’ will populate to eReferral
automatically; the Requested Speciality will populate to the most appropriate speciality; however, if
there are multiple options, it will be blank, select the preferred specialty from the drop down.
                        a) Example: Pain-Wrist could go to Orthopedics or Plastic Surgery.
          4. The triage site will automatically populate if there is only one, or if there are multiple, select from
the dropdown the patient would like to be seen in. The estimated wait times may also be visible
              when opening the drop down.
            5. Save the referral, the attached letter will become visible on the right site.
                        a) Use the attachments section to add any supporting documents that need to be sent with
                            the letter.
                                           i) Click the paperclip on the right side of the referral window.
ii) Filter through chart items, highlight and click add, moving it to the current
                                              attachments box.
            6. Make sure you have assigned the referral to the appropriate employee or job class (clinic specific).
            7. Save the referral.
            8. Double check that you have completed all the necessary fields and have included the necessary
                documentation.
            9. Click send eReferral.
            10. If valid options have been selected and received by CII AND eReferral, the referral number will
populate in the 'Referral No.' field.
            11. If the referral does not automatically pass through triage to eReferral, and is only received by CII,
the referral number will not appear immediately, although you will see 'Received by CII on...
                  <date/time>.
            12. Referrals will go to a Central Access Team to be triaged; they will then send it off to the specialist
within the geographical zone the patient would like to be seen in.
                        a) Once manually triaged by someone at Central Access Team, a referral number will be
assigned to the referral and display in referral management, along with 'Received by
                            eReferral on...<date/time>.
            13. If the triage team declines the referral, they will send the information back to the requesting
office via fax, including the reason why it was declined. The requesting provider will have to
manually change the status of the referral in Healthquest.
                         a) In some cases, the Central Access Team may request additional information. In these cases,
they will manually fax the request back to the requesting provider. The provider will need
to action those additional requests and send a fax back to the Central Access Team with
the referral number included and update their referral management  manually with the
                             adjustments made.
